***8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course for Security Guards

The first step in becoming a New York State security guard is to complete the 8-hour Pre-Assignment Security Course before applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card. This is also sometimes called the 8 Hour pre-registration course.

If you are a good communicator and have passed a background check with no serious convictions or felonies, there are many job opportunities you can pursue in the security industry. This course is where it all begins. Nim Security Training School (NSTS) offers continuing security guard training classes for those who want to pursue a career as a security professional.

The 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards provides students with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in the course include:

  • Role of the security guard
  • Legal powers and limitations
  • Emergencies
  • Communications and public relations
  • Access control
  • Ethics and Conduct

All courses are available either online via Zoom or in person. You will be asked when registering how you will attend. Students must attend the entire 8-hour Security training. An examination will be given on the same day, and a minimum passing score of 70% is required to become a New York State certified security guard. NSTS will provide a certificate of completion to all students with a passing score.

The 16-hour on-the-job Training Course must follow the 8-hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of initial employment. NSTS offers the 16-hour course in addition to the 8-hour Annual for Security Guards, which guards must complete every year. NSTS plans to provide other specialized security and safety training and will notify the public once we are set. New York State law requires registration and training of security guards. NSTS is being approved by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as a security guard training school in New York.

***16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards

NSTS offers a variety of security officer training classes for candidates interested in pursuing a career in protection. To become a security guard in New York State, you must complete the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards. The next step is to take the 16-hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of employment as a security guard.

The security industry offers many job opportunities, and trained security guards are always in high demand. If you’ve been a bouncer, are a retired fireman or police officer, or are looking for a new career with growth opportunities, security guard training is an excellent choice.

The 16-hour On-the-Job Training Course provides students with more specific details on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard than the 8-hour. Topics related to your job that are covered in the course include:

  • Role of the security guard
  • Legal powers and limitations
  • Emergencies
  • Communications and public relations
  • Access control
  • Ethics and Conduct
  • Overview of the incident
  • Command system
  • Terrorism-related topics

All courses are available either online via Zoom or in person. Please make sure you select the type you want to attend. Students must attend both days of the 16-hour Course. An examination will be given on the second day, and a minimum passing score of 70% is required to become certified. NSTS will provide a certificate of completion of security officer training to all students with a passing score.

NSTS also offers the 8-hour course, which guards must complete every year. NSTS will soon offer specialized security and safety training.

New York State law requires security guards to register and train. The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services will soon approve NSTS as a security guard training school.

***8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course for Security Guards

Once you have received a security guard license, New York State requires all security guards to take the 8-hour Annual Security Course within 12 calendar months from completing the 16-hour. The 8-hour Annual In-Service Training Course for Security Guards must be taken annually thereafter.

NSTS offers a course structured to review basic information from initial training and provide students with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. NSTS prides itself on staying on top of the latest security trends and needs to meet all New York State requirements.

We will soon offer specialized security and safety training to ensure premium and executive protection, which is required to meet the needs of society’s latest security threats.
